Upper Mustang Trek – famously called The Last Forbidden Kingdom or the former “Kingdom of Lo is a unique adventure through a stark, treeless landscape below 5,000 meters. Nestled in the northern Mustang at 3,840 m, it offers breathtaking views of Annapurna, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and other Himalayan giants.

Once a restricted region until 1992, Upper Mustang remains one of the best-preserved areas in the world, rich in Tibetan culture, language, history, caves, and rock art. Lo Manthang municipality showcases centuries of Buddhist heritage, with must-visit sites like Chode Gompa, Choprang Gompa, the Royal Palace, and the Monastic Museum, where ancient art and traditions continue to inspire visitors.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Rest after your flight and attend a trek briefing where your guide will explain the itinerary, permits, and safety measures.

Complete trekking permits and TIMS card formalities. Check your trekking gear and equipment, and rest to prepare for high-altitude trekking. Optional sightseeing includes visiting cultural landmarks such as Pashupatinath Temple or Boudhanath Stupa.

Take an early morning flight to Pokhara, a serene city famous for Phewa Lake and Himalayan views. Use the day to relax, explore the lakeside, and finalize preparations for the Mustang journey. Overnight in Pokhara.

Morning flight to Jomsom, with spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Transfer to Kagbeni, the historic gateway to Upper Mustang, and explore the village’s monasteries and narrow streets.

Start trekking along the Kali Gandaki River, passing barren landscapes, rocky trails, and small traditional villages. Reach Chaile by afternoon and enjoy the quiet desert-like environment.

Trek through arid desert terrain with caves, rock formations, and mani walls. Syangboche offers panoramic mountain views and a glimpse into the high-altitude lifestyle. Overnight in Syangboche.

Descend slightly into Ghami, a charming village with traditional Tibetan-style homes. Explore the local monastery and interact with the villagers to experience Mustang’s rich cultural heritage.

Walk across wide valleys and open plains, enjoying spectacular desert landscapes. Visit Charang Monastery and experience the hospitality of the local Tibetan community.

Cross the historic Lo La Pass, enjoying panoramic Himalayan views before reaching Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Upper Mustang. Explore the ancient city, its narrow alleys, and traditional houses.

Spend a free day exploring Lo Manthang’s Royal Palace, monasteries, and museums. Optional visits include Chode and Choprang Gompas, where centuries-old Buddhist art and traditions are preserved.

Trek across high desert trails to Dhakmar, visiting Ghar Gumba, a hidden cave monastery adorned with ancient murals. Enjoy the remote landscapes and local hospitality.

Follow scenic trails across the Tibetan plateau, passing yak pastures and small villages. Geling offers a peaceful stop with stunning surrounding views.

Descend gradually through barren valleys and quaint villages, observing traditional Mustang architecture and the unique desert landscape. 

Return along the Kali Gandaki Valley to Jomsom, enjoying views of Nilgiri, Tukuche, and Dhaulagiri peaks. Relax in Jomsom town before the next day’s flight.

Take a morning flight to Pokhara. Spend the day relaxing, exploring the lakeside, or enjoying optional activities such as boating on Phewa Lake. 

Return to Kathmandu for your final night in Nepal. Optional cultural sightseeing, shopping in Thamel, or relaxing at the hotel. 

Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure, concluding the unforgettable Upper Mustang Trek.
